The Make It Right Bench Tools

"Go sit on the bench and think about what you did" has never once worked.

I've had a Breather Bench in my gym for years, and it does exactly what I need it to do for kids whose emotions have gotten the better of them. But I kept running into a different problem: the kid who wasn't flooded at all, who knew the expectation perfectly well, and who chose to ignore it anyway. Sending that kid to the Breather Bench turns a tool into a punishment, and the moment that happens, the Breather Bench stops working for everyone else.

So I built a second space. The Make It Right Bench is where responsibility-driven behaviours go. It is grounded in restorative practice, which means the point isn't the sitting, it is the repairing. A student pauses, works out what happened and who it affected, picks a way to fix it, and then goes and actually does it before they rejoin the activity.

Here's what's in the pack:

🛑 Pause. The first station on the bench. Take a breather, get your body back. Nobody can do restorative thinking with a flooded brain.

⚠️ Think. Two questions, in order. What happened? Who did this affect? That's the whole step.

🟢 Start. Time to fix it. The student picks how they're going to make it right, then raises a hand and waits for you.

📋 Four option posters. Say what happened. Help the person you affected. Do the job you skipped. Give the class back some time. Each one spelled out in kid-sized language.

🃏 Double-sided reflection cards. Because the bench only serves one student at a time, and some days you need three. Hand a card to a student, point them at a seat, and run the exact same three steps anywhere in your gym.

Everything prints on standard letter paper. I stuck the graphics to an actual bench in my gym, but a wall, a bin lid, or a clipboard would all work fine.
