Help your students learn to read the signals their body sends them with this printable game pack for Portals, a health and fitness game where hula hoops become gateways in an all-out race for the key!
The hard part of teaching fitness to young students is not getting them moving. It is getting them to notice what moving does to them.
Ask a class of six-year-olds how they know their body is working hard and you will get shrugs. Ask them thirty seconds after Portals and you get hands in the air, palms on chests, and a lot of shouting about hearts.
The game is built around a wait. Your class sits in a rainbow circle holding hula hoops upright between them, and a group of runners jogs around the outside. At some point you call for the key. You decide when. Two steps in, half a lap in, a full lap in. Nobody can predict it, so nobody can coast. When the call comes, the runners dive through the nearest portal and sprint for the middle, and every round ends with a class that is breathing hard and grinning.
That is an interval workout with a story on top of it, and it means the conversation about heart rate and effort happens when students actually have something to report.
🏃 Build One: Runners. Hoops flat on the floor, no portals, no key. You call a colour and that group races around the circle and back to their spot. This is your warm-up, and it teaches the formation and the running direction before there is anything else to think about.
🌀 Build Two: Portals. The hoops come up and the key goes down. Runners jog the outside until you call, then hop through the nearest portal and race for the middle. This is the game.
🌈 Build Three: Rainbow Portals. Six keys now, one per colour, and you name the colour when you call. Runners cannot turn around, so they have to scan ahead and commit. A runner who has just passed the purple portal is covering almost a full lap to get back to it.
The thing worth protecting when you teach this is the unpredictability of the call. It is tempting to settle into a rhythm, and the moment you do, runners stop watching you and the burst goes soft. Stretch some waits until it feels uncomfortable. That is where the game lives.
The pack includes the full game, all three builds with their diagrams, learning targets, discussion questions, assessment ideas, and teacher notes.
Happy Teaching!
