About this Resource

In most tee games, the batter hits the ball and then waits to find out what happens.

They swing, they run, and somewhere out in the field a decision gets made that determines whether that swing was worth anything. The batter ends up as a spectator to their own at-bat.

Bucketball hands the scoring back to them. Four buckets in a line, one point for each one you tap with the bat, up to four. The ball is live and you are running the line banking points until the fielding team manages to hit the first base bucket with it. Every step you take is worth something, and every second the fielders spend sorting themselves out is a step you get for free.

That is what makes hitting into open space matter here. Not because a poster on the wall says so, but because a ball sent straight at a fielder costs you two or three points you could have had.

The fielders get the mirror image of that problem, and it is a harder one than it looks. Their job is simple to state: move the ball to first base as fast as possible. Not chase the batter. Not make the spectacular play. Just move it. Most classes discover this the same way, by having half the group sprint at the ball simultaneously while the batter taps all four buckets at a walk.

🪣 Build One: Bucket Run. No fielders working against anyone. Batters hit off the tee, run the line, and tap all four buckets every time. This build exists to make bat safety and the tapping routine automatic before any pressure arrives.

🥎 Build Two: Beat The Fielders. The fielders come in and the race begins. Still no strikes and no outs, so every batter gets three swings and rotates. This is where the core tension of the game shows up and where the good conversations happen.

Build Three: Bucketball. Strikes and outs arrive. Foul balls, swings and misses, and balls fielded to first before the batter gets there all count against you, and a caught ball ends your at-bat outright. Batters now stay up as long as they can last.

There are no teams in this game, which is worth noticing. One player bats, everyone else fields, and the points belong to individuals rather than sides. It keeps the whole class involved in every single at-bat, and it quietly removes the "we lost because of you" conversation before it can start.

The pack includes the full game, all three builds with their diagrams, learning targets, discussion questions, assessment ideas, and teacher notes.

Happy Teaching!
