Some students hang back in competitive games, and it usually isn't because they can't play.
It's because they don't know what they're supposed to be doing. The game is loud and fast and full of decisions, and if you have no idea what your job is, standing near the edge of it is the sensible option.
With my grade ones, I use a puzzle to explain the way out of that.
🎯 The goal is to put the puzzle together.
🗺️ The plan is the strategy you'll use to get there, like building the edges first.
🧩 Your part is the piece you're responsible for finding and connecting.
Once students can hold those three things apart, a game stops being a wall of noise and becomes something they can locate themselves inside. Benchball is where we practise it, because 3v3 is small enough that every role is visible and nobody can disappear.

The pack builds to that in two steps. Build One is the full game with no positions at all, three a side, everyone chasing the ball. It looks like a mess and it's supposed to, because students who have felt that mess actually want the structure when it arrives. Build Two hands out the roles.
One practical thing that made this work far better than it had any right to: I spray painted numbers onto our class set of pinnies. Each number gets assigned to a role at the start of a game, which means students can see their own job and everyone else's, and rotations become one instruction instead of a negotiation. My Player Role Cards are free on the site and do the same work as an anchor chart.
By the end of the unit, students were stepping onto the court knowing what they could do to help their team. What I heard afterward wasn't about winning. It was "I saved a goal", "I made a great pass", "I took a shot on net."
